Hayfever season is here: quick tips from behind the counter

The first warm days of spring bring out the worst in pollen, and we've already seen the seasonal rush for antihistamines. A few things worth knowing:
Start your antihistamines before symptoms hit. They work much better as a preventer than a fix, once your eyes are streaming and your nose is running, you're playing catch-up. If you know you're a hayfever sufferer, start dosing a week or two before peak season.
Not all antihistamines are equal. Older ones (like Polaramine) make most people drowsy; newer ones (Telfast, Claratyne, Zyrtec) don't, but they affect different people differently. If one isn't working for you, try switching — what suits your neighbour might not suit you.
For persistent or severe symptoms, a steroid nasal spray (used daily, not as needed) is often more effective than tablets. Ask a pharmacist which one suits your situation — we can recommend something appropriate and explain how to use it properly.
Drop in for advice any time during pharmacy hours.
